Belo Horizonte Brazilian Charity Fundraiser
The Washington Pirés Charity fundraiser is being held at the South Parade Baptist Church in Headingley Leeds on Friday the 13th of May.
This event came about following a meeting of Leeds Anja Lambley-Steel with a Brazilian family in 2008. They came to volunteer and support Leeds for one year working alongside volunteers at KidzKlub Leeds.
To honour this family for their support here in Leeds Anja is raising money for the work they are currently doing in Belo Horizonte, in the Favela called Washington Pirés located in Ibirite which is 25yrs old with about 7,000 people living in poverty. This Favela, like many, has been consistently forgotten by the authorities & has few services or facilities.
There is now a church in the Favela working towards making a difference in the community with very little resources.
The church at the moment has a project for the community which includes football (for both boys & girls), ballet, music lessons & computer studies. They are also helping the community with prison visiting, food & clothes donations, medical help amongst many other things. Drugs & gangs are rife in the Favela. They also have plans to set up a Kidz Klub eventually should funds permit.
Bernie Fell another Leeds lady, has set up a working group to fundraise and take teams out on a regular basis in Brazil. She has given her job up in the UK to commit to this project and is in the process of setting up charity status.
During this month Bernie has had meetings with Mayors, Civil Police bosses, Military Police Commanders, Politicians, including noteworthy human rights Politicians in Brazil She has also addresses the local Parliament, visited prisons, food banks and schools to raise awareness for this project.
The fundraising event will be held at South Parade Baptist Church in Headingley Leeds and will start at 7Pm. 120 guests are expected.
All the organizers and fundraisers are looking forward to the event and are very excited about raising money to help. This money raised will be going towards work with young people in a favela in Belo
Please support this worthy cause by attending and inviting friends, family and business colleagues to come out in support.
